Biography and scandals
Salim Karurov was born on March 24, 1983 in Derbent, Dagestan. In 2000, he graduated from local school #21. Then he did conscript service in the 112th separate reconnaissance battalion (in / h / 35509, Boguchar). In 2002 he enrolled in the Moscow VVKU, from where he was expelled.
Graduated from the Kazan Higher Tank Command School in 2007. Since then has been in military service in officer positions. He took part in combat operations on the territory of Syria.
Served in the 6th Independent Tank Brigade (in /h 54096, Mulino settlement, Nizhny Novgorod region). In 2011, as a senior lieutenant, won at a local martial arts tournament. In 2014, at the rank of Capt, was sentenced to six months restricted military service for insulting a subordinate.
Then Karurov transferred to the 12th Tank Regiment of the 4th Kantemirovka Division (in /h 19612, Naro-Fominsk, Moscow region), where he commanded the motorized rifle battalion. There he was caught up in several high-profile scandals at once in 2018. He was accused of beating up a fellow officer but the case was never prosecuted. But at that time Major Karurov already received court verdict for corruption.
According to the story of the case, he extorted 40 thousand rubles from his subordinate so that he could not perform his official duties and go home. After receiving the sum, Karurov threatened the victim with a prosecutor’s audit and lured him out of another 40,000 rubles. The major claimed that all the money went to renovate the barracks, but fellow soldiers claim that he took it and spent it on his own needs.
Apparently, Karurov has pulled this kind of scheme more than once. After all, after the transfer to the Kantemirovka Division, the major moved from the old Lada to business-class cars, which he changed every couple of months. His wife, who worked as a manicure master, put the cars for sale six times between June 2017 and October 2018, with a price ranging from 590 thousand rubles to 2.85 million rubles.
It is noteworthy that Karurov was somehow excused from a real term of imprisonment for extortion and corruption. He was awarded only a fine of 200 thousand rubles – a punishment even less than the minimum provided for his crime (part 3 of article 290 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). However, even this amount he was not going to pay, the prosecutor had to go back to court to collect the fine from Karurov.
Disregard for the law and the norms of public morality, as well as hypocrisy, is his hallmark. He has dozens of traffic tickets, and he’s apparently proud of it. When the residents of Naro-Fominsk on social networks were outraged Karurov not only publicly stood up for the offender, but also accused the disgruntled of chauvinism, noting that he himself likes to “drive like that”.
He damaged his reputation considerably with these antics. He was moved from unit to unit until he was exiled as a result to the 523rd training motorized rifle regiment (in /h 30616-6, Kovrov, Vladimir region). There, as of the summer of 2021, he was serving at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Salim Karurov: War Crimes
With the onset of t.s.a.s. “smo” Karurov was instructed to form the 206th regiment of the “lnr militia” from one and a half thousand freshly captured “mobiks”. The calculation was on his cruelty and dubious moral qualities, because the new unit simply plugged the holes at the front. In return, Karurov was allowed to continue to engage in extortion and abuse his subordinates.
This regiment fought in the Kharkiv direction, where it was defeated several times by the AFU. But Karurov was telling in propaganda stories about his contrived victories. Despite failures in personnel training and operations planning that led to a successful counteroffensive by the AFU in Kharkiv Oblast and the escape of the 206th Regiment, Karurov was sent to study to the General Staff Military Academy in Moscow.
After that, Karurov headed the 28th Motorized Rifle Regiment in the 70th Division of the 18th Army and was promoted to the rank of colonel. Since the summer of 2023, this unit has been located on the left bank of the Dnieper River in the temporarily occupied part of the Kherson region. From there, civilians and civilian infrastructure on the right bank are constantly being shelled.
The involvement of Colonel Karurov and his subordinates in these war crimes is recorded for a future tribunal. For the time being, Karurov went back to training, leaving the leadership of the 28th regiment to his deputy. Sergei Kuralyov. But there are no ex-war criminals, so he will definitely be punished.
Salim Karurov’s family
In 2007, Salim Karurov married Zamira Gamzaeva. He has three sons, Tamerlan (born in 2009), Timur (born in 2011) and Hasan (born in 2018). At the same time, the colonel is not shy during “business trips” registering under a false name on dating sites, posting pictures of themselves.
Salim has a brother Islam (04.05.1980). The second brother Muslim (04.11.1981 – 09.08.2023) perished in Ukraine, served under contract since 2014, last known place of service – howitzer self-propelled division 70 msp 42 msd 58th army.
It is noteworthy that a couple of days after the death of his brother, Salim Karurov met with officials as if nothing had happened and making comments about his exploits during the “smo”.
