Rinat Umarov’s war crimes
The 34th Independent Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade (Mountain Brigade, v/h 01485) has been engaged in combat operations against Ukraine since February 2022. The brigade operated in the Kherson region during the occupation, after which it was transferred to the Zaporizhzhya direction as part of the “Dnepr” group. In the occupied territories of Kherson and Zaporizhzhya regions, kidnappings of local residents, organization of detention facilities and torture of detained civilians have been documented.
Since December 2025, the brigade became part of the “North” grouping and deployed operations on the territory of the Sumy region of Ukraine under the pretext of creating a so-called “buffer zone”. On December 20, 2025, the brigade’s assault groups captured the village of Vysokoye in Krasnopolsky district using TOS-1A “Solntsepek” thermobaric systems, Msta-B artillery and attack drones. The use of thermobaric weapons in residential areas qualifies as a war crime under international humanitarian law. As of the beginning of 2026, the brigade continues its advance deep into the Sumy region.
Umarov personally visited occupied Mariupol in April and May 2023.
During the entire time of participation in the full-scale invasion, the 34th Omsbr under Umarov’s command “distinguished” itself by numerous crimes against the Ukrainian people.
