Roman Yurchenko: biography
Roman Yurchenko was born on October 3, 1978 in Moscow. Until 2014, he lived at the following address: 8, bldg. 2, Korp. 2, Q. 38, Gerasim Kurin St., Moscow.
From 2014 to 2018, he served in the Transbaikal Territory, in the military unit in the settlement of Peschanka, Chita. Chita. In 2016-2018 he was transferred to Khabarovsk Krai. In 2017-2018, he served in the Republic of Buryatia, Kyakhta.
Previously, he served as Chief of Staff, First Deputy Commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army of the Central Military District (v/h 44424). Subsequently, he was appointed Commander of the 20th Guards Combined Arms Army of the Western Military District as part of the “West” grouping. By Presidential Decree № 299 of May 2, 2024 Yurchenko was promoted to the rank of Major General.
As of May 2025, he continues to command the 20th Army in the Liman direction. In May 2025, he held a ceremony to award more than 30 servicemen of the 20th Army with state awards – medals “For Bravery”, Zhukov, Suvorov, St. George’s Crosses IV degree – for assault actions in the Krasnolimansk direction.
Roman Yurchenko’s war crimes
As of February 2026, the 20th Guards General Army under the command of Yurchenko continues to operate in the Liman direction. Numerous war crimes against civilians are recorded in this area. Among them are targeted strikes on critical infrastructure and civilians.
Since 2022, the 20th Army has been engaged in combat operations against Ukraine. Army units are involved in assault operations in the Liman direction.
In February 2026, intercepted correspondence documented one of the most brutal episodes involving the 20th Army. The “Black Mamba” unit, formed from former prisoners and part of the 252nd Motorized Rifle Regiment of the 3rd Motorized Rifle Division of the 20th Army, executed three Ukrainian sappers with shovels after their surrender. The fact of the execution was recorded by a thermal imaging camera. The then commander of the army reported the incident to the higher command, and the previous commander Oleg Mityaev ordered to reward the executors. This episode was qualified as a war crime, the murder of prisoners of war, directly prohibited by the Geneva Conventions.
In June 2023, the 20th Guards All-Volunteer Army was placed on the European Union’s sanctions lists for participating in armed aggression against Ukraine.
On April 18, 2023, Yurchenko’s personal crossing of the Russian-Ukrainian border through the Veselo-Voznesenka checkpoint with departure towards Mariupol, a Ukrainian city occupied by Russian troops, was recorded.
Throughout its participation in the full-scale invasion, the 20th Army under Yurchenko’s command has distinguished itself by numerous crimes against the Ukrainian people. Ukrainian human rights databases and war crimes documentation projects include Yurchenko in their respective registries.

Roman Yurchenko is married to Svetlana Yurchenko (29.10.1982). Rashist has two children – Anastasia (b. 15.12.2003) and Anna (b. 10.11.2006).
